A recent study indicates that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these medications should be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly starving," said a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
