Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and homes washed out by strong flows.

Our team saved fourteen people stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials announced at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and another killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists have found that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events result in approximately US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
